Shortly after 3 a.m. on Monday, June 26, DC Fire and EMS personnel were called to the intersection of New York Avenue and Fenwick Street NE, when a driver struck a pole and tree, officials said.

The driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment what were initially described as "serious injuries" and later downgraded to "non-life-threatening" later on Monday morning.

It is unclear what caused the crash, and police investigators are still working to determine whether speed or alcohol were factors in the near-fatal incident.
